Reuben Hot Dogs

Reuben Hot Dogs combine the flavors of a tangy Reuben sandwich with the salty snap of a traditional hot dog. It is a match made in heaven!

There are certain foods that just seem to bring me back to a particular place and time. Reuben sandwiches are one of those foods. 

Many mannnnnny years ago my mother took me to a funky little place that she found in downtown National City. It was a Mexican/Irish pub. Yes, I know that sounds weird, but it is very popular in Southern California. It was called McDini's Baja, and one of the things they touted was their "80 beers around the world". 

See my Mom knew I would love it for a couple of reasons. They had Mexican food, which is my favorite food on the planet, but I collected beer bottles so she knew I would flip out over the selection that they had to offer. Which I proceeded to do as soon as we walked in. I made a scene, it was a bit embarrassing, and seriously I have no idea how I was still served! 

But hey, I am easily excited, I can't help it.

So they quickly shuttled us to the back of the restaurant and handed us our menus. It was really strange to see carne asada right next to corned beef and cabbage on a menu, but I was game. 

After much deliberation, I decided on the Reuben sandwich. Which of course shocked my Mother to no end, but I wanted to try one. She was worried that I wouldn't like the sauerkraut and, to be honest, so was I. But I just had this wild hair and had to go for it.

When they brought my sandwich out to me I just about fell over. 

It was piled so high with corned beef I could barely see my Mother across the table! Gooey cheese peeked out from under the sauerkraut, and Russian dressing dripped from the sides. My Mother quickly announced that I should eat the sandwich with a knife and fork. 

Are you kidding me? 

Have you met me? 

I was, and still am, not very ladylike. I like to dig into my food and enjoy it. The messier the better in my book, much to my Mother's dismay. But you have to give her credit for trying right?

That sandwich was life-changing. 

No joke! 

I would have major cravings for it at all hours of the days and night and, if the restaurant was open, I would drive the 30 minutes (or more) to go get one. I became very well known in a very short amount of time. In fact, all I had to do was walk in and they would call an order back for a Reuben sandwich just for me. It kinda made me feel special.

So, that love for Reubens has never stopped. But since I moved to Washington I have not been able to find a place that could even come close to what I was used to and, for some reason, I have yet to make them at home. 

I am not sure why. Maybe I am afraid that it won't measure up. 

However, I have played around with the Reuben "theme" a few times. One of which was my Mini Reuben Pigs in Blankets. There was also Reuben Mac and Cheese, and Hot Reuben Dip. All of which were fabulous and the family really enjoyed them. 

So I thought maybe my Reuben hang up had passed. 

Then, with the summer upon us and so much BBQing going on, I started craving hot dogs. 

We had already done a million burgers, chicken, steak, ribs, blah blah blah. How about some good ol' dogs? 


But let's face it, plain hot dogs only work maybe once a month. 

*Yawn* kinda boring. 

So my little mind started working on how I could elevate the humble hot dog to something extraordinary. I made BLT Hot Dogs for National Bacon Day and then set my mind on mashing up my love for Reubens with our little doggies. 

I decided to go with Pastrami for a little twist but kept everything else pretty true to the classic. My Russian Dressing is a bit spicy, not too much, but it gives it that nice little "pop" to really make this hot dog rock.

The result was two people cramming hot dogs in their face as fast as they could swallow! They might not fill my cravings for that fabulous sandwich of my past, but I can tell you that they are messy and good, and definitely a favorite hot dog of my present!!

Yield: 8 dogs

Reuben Hot Dogs

Reuben Hot Dogs combine the flavors of a tangy Reuben sandwich with the salty snap of a traditional hot dog. It is a match made in heaven!

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt (can use mayonnaise) 
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons Sriracha sauce
  • 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish
  • 1 tablespoon onion, finely diced or grated
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Kosher salt
  • Fresh cracked black pepper
  • 8 all beef hot dogs 
  • 8 slices deli pastrami
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 cups sauerkraut, drained
  • 8 large hot dog buns


  1. In a small bowl, combine the first 6 ingredients. Cover and place in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Wrap each hot dog with a slice of pastrami and secure it with toothpicks.
  3. Heat the grill to medium-high, and grill until the pastrami begins to crisp, turning every few minutes. Remove to a plate and discard the toothpicks
  4. Meanwhile place the buns on the grill and toast.
  5. Place 1 slice of Swiss cheese on each bun, followed by a pastrami wrapped hot dog. Top with 1/4 cup sauerkraut, and drizzle with Russian dressing.

  13. I live in a household full of hotdogs eaters. I am happy and content with a plain dog but the other live on a slightly more riskier edge. I do however think this sounds good and would love to try it!

    1. Haha it really is a small world!! I am not sure if the restaurant still exists, it has been a long time since I have been back to CA. I think the last time I was there was St Patrick's Day 2005. I Hope it does though I have a lot of memories there!
