I am soooooo excited it  is almost Christmas!

I have always loved the holidays.

When I was a kid it meant that family members, that we rarely got to see, would be coming to town.

We would all get together at my Grandparents house and catch up on the happenings from the previous year.

I remember one year my Great Grandmother came from Iowa.

She was the sweetest, kindest, most loving Grandma and kid could ever have!

One night she snuck into the room I was sleeping in and told me that she couldn't sleep, so she climbed into bed with me, and we proceeded to talk and giggle all night long.

Then, mid-story, she said, "Oh, I think I hear Santa! We had better be quiet!!" I was quiet as a church mouse.

I still miss her so much!

Then a few years ago I lost my Dad at Thanksgiving.

It made it difficult for me to really be 100%.

He was an awesome Dad and my biggest cheerleader. It was hard to celebrate without him.

Buuuuuttttttt then a wonderful thing happened.

I became a grandparent to the most amazing, beautiful baby girl in the whole wide world. She fills my heart with so much joy sometimes I think I might just explode

So now the torch has been passed to me to share traditions for the holidays.

I want my kids, and grandkids, to have wonderful stories to tell, just like I do.

One of my Grandmothers traditions was to serve this oyster stew as a starter for the meal.

I remember everyone sitting down at a hooooooomungus dining room table. That was when the wine would be brought out for the meal. She was very much into pairing so she would instruct everyone on which wine to drink with what food.

Maybe that is where I gained my love of wine, and finding the perfect dish to pair it with.

Or my bossy side!

This year I have decided to serve Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio.

Well, first off, because they are my fave wines, but also because they both work well with a range of dishes.

I would probably pair the Pinot Grigio with this stew because it is super delicioso with rich seafood types of yummies, like this stew

Howevs, the Pinot Noir cannot be ruled out. It works fantabulously with umami flavors (oohh lookie me getting all foodie on ya), which is basically anything "earthy" like mushrooms, and goes with fish as well.

I can tell you that if I am asked what wine I would most like to sip on its own, I would answer the Pinot Noir 100% of the time.

There is one story that I will continue to tell as long as I live.

One year, when my daughter was about 6 or 7, she wrote her letter to Santa and it said she didn't want anything for Christmas, she didn't need any more toys.

She wanted him to take what he would be bringing to her, and give it to another little girl that didn't have anything so  that was the year we started a tradition of giving gifts to those people that were less fortunate.

Do you have any special family traditions? I would love to hear about them!

Oh, and BTDubs?

I am pretty ding dang thankful for all of you

Grandma's Oyster Stew

This classic oyster stew is a quick, easy, and delicious way to start your holiday meal. It is my Grandmother's recipe and is as rich in flavor as it is in holiday tradition
prep time: 15 MINScook time: 15 MINStotal time: 30 mins

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 shallots, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 stalk celery, fine chopped
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (can use gluten-free all-purpose flour for a GF stew)
  • 1/2 cup white wine (I used Pinot Grigio)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 16 ounces of oysters (if they are large you can chop them)
  • Kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (I added a pinch more at the end because we like it spicy)
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • Fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped (optional)
  • Oyster crackers (optional)

  1. In a large saute pan, melt the 4 tablespoons butter. add the shallots, garlic, and celery and cook until they begin to soften, 3 to 5 minutes.
  2. Sprinkle the flour over the veggies, and stir for 1 to 2 mins to cook off the flour taste. Whisk in white wine and cook for a minute or so, then stir in the milk, cream, and the liquid from the oysters. Season the mixture with salt (remember the oysters will be added and they are salty so go easy), cayenne, paprika, and white pepper.
  3. Bring the liquid up to a simmer. Simmer the liquid for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the oysters and bring the liquid back up to a simmer and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the oysters curl. Remove from the heat. Taste and adjust seasonings if needed.
  4. Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with chopped parsley and oyster crackers.
