Sunset over White City Kansas.

Howdy, gang!

Today I am super excited to share the adventures from my recent trip to Kansas with Certified Angus Beef ® brand.

It was quite the whirlwind of events!

From the city to the prairie, I enjoyed good food, great people, and learned a ton of information, all cram packed into 2 1/2 days.

It started out last Sunday. I flew out of Seattle at 12:30 on a 60-degree rainy day (shocker right?), and landed in Kansas City at around 3:30. The first thing that happened was I was smacked right in the face with what summertime in Kansas is like - 90+ degrees with a heat index (something I obviously know nothing about living in Western Washington) of about 103 😯

I got to the hotel, unpacked, and watched a little bit of NASCAR while I waited for everyone else to arrive, and to head off to dinner.

We went to an awesome BBQ joint called Q39

Living in Washington, and being from California, I have never had the opportunity to enjoy real BBQ. Being a food blogger, I always want to experience new, and good, food so being able to enjoy some good ol' Kansas City BBQ had this girl uber excited.

On their website, they say that they put all of their energy and passion into creating Kansas City's best BBQ and that is not a lie!

From the smoked and grilled pork belly to the Certified Angus Beef ® brand smoked brisket, with burnt ends, and a massive beef short rib, and cheesecake with chocolate ganache, dulce de leche, and chopped pecans, my taste buds were doing the happy dance.

After dinner, we waddled headed back to the hotel to get some sleep so we could get up bright and early to head to the Blythe Family Farm and the Tiffany Cattle Company.

The Blythe Family
Our first stop was the Blythe Family Farm and we met Debbie Blythe. All I can say is that Debbie is one of the most passionate, caring, and genuine people I have ever met. Within the first few minutes, I felt like this was home and I was part of the family!

But, Debbie is also a proudly dedicated rancher and it shows in everything that she does. On the WIBW News website, they called her the nation’s best-known agriculture spokesperson and I can totally believe it! I could literally listen to her talk for hours and probably never even scratch the top of the amount of knowledge she has when it comes to ranching, cattle, the environment, and how to make sure that they all support and balance each other. Check out her blog, Kids, Cows, and Grass to see exactly what I mean.

While we were there we were able to visit 2 of her 11 pastures. We got to see some of the cattle, and Debbie explained how they make sure that they have the best of everything they need to stay healthy and happy.

She explained that Kansas is going through one of the worst droughts they have had in years. To make that point completely clear Kansas, on average, gets 30 inches of rain a year. This past year they have only had 11 inches!

We all know that water is life and that isn't any different for cattle ranchers. Debbie showed us how the drought was affecting the farmers. From wheat fields that they were having to harvest early, without the grain really producing, to corn fields that were several inches shorter than they should be. Their leaves were curled in to protect them from the hot Kansas sun.

We could see it in the prairie grass as well.

On to the second pasture and a really cool watering hole. Several of her pastures are spring fed and, on this one, we saw this cool solar powered pump. The pump has a float that triggers it to start pumping when the water level gets low. SO cool!

It looked so good I wanted to jump in to cool down. It was 90+ degrees again that day!

We also took a tour of the Tiffany Cattle Company and met Shawn and Shane Tiffany. They are both very passionate about what they do too. But they make sure they balance out their work lives with their family lives and they make sure their employees do as well. They have more people on their staff than they really need because they want to make sure they are able to take time off for important family time and they should know about family needs because they have 8 kids between the two of them!

Throughout the tour, they showed us and explained how they make sure to provide they cattle that the ranchers entrust them with the very best of care. From the cowboys that are assigned to each group of cattle to make sure they are closely watched and monitored to make sure they stay in tip-top health, to the food they feed, and even the time the cattle get fed.

They pointed out that when we get those hunger pangs and ignore them, we end up skipping a meal, I know I do. Well, cattle are no different so they make sure that the cattle are fed within 15 minutes of their scheduled meal time.

I wish someone would do that for me!

Fun fact - You know how we have our place at the table, where we always sit to eat? Well, cattle do too! They will find their favorite place in the line and go there for every feeding time!

Who knew cattle were creatures of habit just like us?

After taking in all of this great info, it was time to take in some awesome food, so we were off to the Blythe Family's barn that was being painted with the Certified Angus Beef ® brand logo.

Certified Angus Beef ® brand is celebrating their 40th year so they are painting 40 barns across the country with their logo. This is barn #16

The artist is Troy. He will be painting all 40 barns this summer. His company is Free Sky Studios and he has done some amazing work!

We all sat down to a wonderful meal that was catered by Little Apple Brewing Company. The guest list included the Blythe family and friends, along with some Certified Angus Beef ® brand peeps, the bloggers, and even the Lieutenant Governor!

After we chowed down, the sun was going down and a breeze kicked up so we grabbed our chairs and some wine and headed out to watch Troy finishing up the logo. We were all laughing that we were actually watching paint dry 😂

It was the perfect end to a fabulous day!

Many thanks to Certified Angus Beef ® brand for sponsoring this trip and inviting little ol' me along!

Say hello to my fellow beef-loving blogger buds!
