Join my newsletter and never miss a recipe!I don't know about you, but the only way my Mom got me to eat veggies was by smothering them in Cheez Whiz.
On the back of a Cheez Whiz jar, you'll discover a lengthy essay of ingredients: whey, milk, canola oil, maltodextrin, milk protein concentrate, sodium phosphate, contains less than 2% of modified food starch, salt, lactic acid, whey protein concentrate, mustard flour, Worcestershire sauce [vinegar, molasses, corn syrup, water, salt, caramel color, garlic powder, sugar, spices (contains celery), tamarind, natural flavor], sodium alginate, sorbic acid as a preservative, color added, cheese culture, enzymes, natural flavor.
The first listed and thus most prominent ingredient in Cheez Whiz is whey, the liquid that is released from cheese curds during the cheesemaking process. Aside from this milk protein byproduct, Cheez Whiz is largely comprised of salt-packed flavorings and a mixture of chemicals that give it its long life and bright yellow color.
Ummm I'll pass on that thank you very much!
Broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, you name it, if it was funky, it had to be completely covered in cheese before I would even think about putting it in my mouth!
Fast forward that to my kids and it was the same story.
After my run-in with cancer for the 2nd time in 2010, my first time was when I was 11, I really started to pay attention to the ingredients in the food my family was eating.
I took a look at the label for Cheez Whiz and was shocked by what I found!
Did you know that there is little no actual cheese in Cheez Whiz?

Now fast forward to my venture into the low carb lifestyle.
Cheese sauce is something I saw so many people talking about.
But there was no way I was busting out that nasty old stuff from my childhood, that's for sure.
So I tinkered here and there until I came up with a sauce that not only I loved, but everyone, including the pickiest of eaters in my family, loved.
That my friends is this cheese sauce right here.
Easy to make and super delicious!
INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO MAKE EASY KETO CHEESE SAUCE
- Unsalted butter
- Heavy cream
- Creamed cheese
- Mustard powder
- Cheddar cheese, sharp or regular

The thing that is awesome about this cheese sauce is that it takes very few ingredients and just a few minutes to make. So it is one of those recipes that can be a last-minute "What in the heck are we gonna have for dinner?" rescue recipe that you whip out to save the day.
A prime example - I love fresh produce, but always have frozen broccoli and cauliflower florets in the freezer for those last-minute oopsies.
You know the nights that you just flat out forget to take something out for dinner?
Or is that just me?
Anywho, this sauce + frozen broccoli or cauliflower is an absolute Godsend! And means your side dish will be done in less than 10 minutes folks!
So, even though you forgot to plan, I call that a win in my book 😉
FAQ ABOUT EASY KETO CHEESE SAUCE
Can I use pre-shredded cheddar cheese? I don't suggest using pre-shredded cheese because the shredded cheese is coated with things like starch or even cellulose aka wood fiber to keep it from clumping in the bag. Those additives can not only add carbs but will keep it from creating a nice smooth sauce. Also, I don't really want to eat wood pulp.
Can I use another cheese instead of cheddar? Absolutely, I have made this sauce with everything from cheddar, to Monterey jack, pepper jack, mozzarella, and more. The sky, and your imagination, is the limit!
Can I make this sauce ahead and store it in the fridge? I don't recommend it really. It will get really thick and then you will have to warm it and add more heavy cream, or other liquid to thin it out. In the time it would take to get it back to the right consistency you could have made a fresh batch!
