Many people think that peanut butter is off-limits if you are on a keto diet but that is not true!
You see, peanuts themselves are totally keto. Yes they have carbs, and there are other nuts that are lower in carbs, but for the amount, you would eat in a single serving they are fairly low.
It is the sugar that most commercial peanut butter adds that makes them high in carbs.
Now, for me, someone that is more low-carb vs strict keto, that doesn't add a lot of issues. But for someone that suffers from some chronic medical conditions that sugar can exacerbate, homemade is the way to go.
Plus, even though I can have more carbs than someone that is on strict keto, I don't wanna blow all of my carbs on some peanut butter!

Ingredients
This homemade peanut butter calls for roasted peanuts, some MCT oil (optional), and some low-carb sweetener, (also optional). It makes approximately 2 pints of peanut butter, which equals 32, 2-tablespoon servings. That calculates to less than 3 net carbs per serving vs 8 carbs, or more, per serving of your typical store-bought peanut butter.
Detailed measurements can be found on the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page.
- Roasted peanuts (salted or unsalted)
- Coconut or MCT oil
- Besti Monk Fruit and Allulose Sweetener
- Pink sea salt, optional (to taste)
Instructions
This is a quick breakdown of a few steps involved in making homemade keto peanut butter. You will find the full directions in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
Using a good food processor, and a high-powered blender, process the peanuts to a sandy consistency. Add 1 tablespoon of oil (if using).
Add sweetener, to taste.
Drizzle in the other tablespoon of oil to make it slightly thinner (if using) and add fat.
Continue to process/blend, (it will take some time) until the peanut butter reaches the desired consistency.
Hint: If you prefer a thinner peanut butter consistency you can add some water instead of more coconut oil or MCT oil.
Substitutions
This recipe can be used to make any nut butter. You can make the butter half peanut and half another nut, or entirely from another nut. These are a few of the low carb nut butters I have made.
- Pecans - This one is really good when you add the maple syrup from the variations below.
- Macadamia - I love using a tablespoon of this nut butter as a fat bomb/energy boost in the afternoon.
- Hazelnuts - Hazelnuts are another low carb nut option and, if you add the cocoa powder from the chocolate variation idea below you have homemade Nutella.
Variations
Here are a few flavor variations that my family enjoys.
- Chocolate Peanut Butter - if you are a chocolate and peanut butter lover like we are then try adding 3 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder to this recipe. Taste and add more cocoa powder and sweetener to meet your taste.
- Maple Peanut Butter - my husband and our daughter both love to slather peanut butter on their pancakes and waffles and then drizzle them with maple syrup. This just combines those two steps into one. Add 6 to 9 tablespoons of keto maple syrup to the recipe.
- Spicy Peanut Butter - we love to combine sweet and savory and spicy and sweet. This spicy keto peanut butter is amazing on a hamburger! Omit the coconut oil and add 3 tablespoons of chile oil and 3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper. Taste and add more if you want an extra kick!

Equipment
You will need a good high speed blender or food processor to make this peanut butter.
Storage
Store your keto homemade peanut butter in an airtight container (I use pint mason jars).
This peanut butter can be keto at room temperature in a cool dry place but the oils from the peanuts can cause it to go rancid so if you don't eat a ton of peanut butter in your household I would suggest storing your peanut butter in the refrigerator, where it will keep up to 3 months (or longer).
FAQ
It should keep for a week or two if stored in an airtight container in a cool dry place. It will last 3 months (or longer) if stored in the refrigerator.
If your peanut butter has gone rancid it will smell sharp, soapy, or bitter.
Yes, you can either freeze it in small freezer-safe containers or in ice cube trays for small amounts you can add directly into smoothies and sauces.

Of course, we have to start with some keto peanut butter cookies right? They are so easy to make and SO good! Or how about these Keto Peanut Butter and Chocolate Eggs for Easter (or any time really)? They are basically a keto Reeses cup! I also can't get enough of this Spicy Peanut Cucumber Noodle Salad!
